Principal's Welcome Message and Presentation to Staff and Students on First Day of School, Sept. 5th
Welcome back! I hope everyone has enjoyed a restful summer and is ready to begin a new school year with a refreshed zest and vigour. My name is Vito Colella and I am the new (proud and excited) Principal of Saint Patrick Catholic Elementary School. Let me state how pleased I am to be here! I have met some of you and your children and I look forward to a great year(s) together along with our wonderful staff.
While I am certain it was an enjoyable summer for all, the St. Patrick cleaning staff was active through the months of July and August. I would like to thank Mr. Mamone, Mr. Tinebra, Mr. Hagel and Mr. Perri for restoring the school’s inner beauty over the summer. As well, thanks to all the staff (past and present) for giving of their own time during the summer to prepare their classrooms for the new year.
We welcome to our school all the new students who will walk through our doors for the first time in September. We also welcome many new staff. I am sure you join me in my enthusiasm for the new year with such wonderful additions to an already stellar staff! Welcome to all of you and we hope you enjoy your stay at St. Patrick CES.
As the new leader of this wonderful Catholic learning community, I will strive to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning for our students, staff, and parents. At St. Patrick Catholic School, we believe that all students can achieve. We are working smarter to help all children meet or exceed the grade level expectations in all areas. Our goal is to ensure that all children reach high levels of success. We will continue to sustain a learning environment that will encourage active learning, positive social interactions, and self-motivation with the utmost emphasis on a happy, safe, and nurturing atmosphere.
We recognize that students are unique individuals. Children come to school with varied experiences, skills, strengths, and needs. We focus on helping students connect new learning with prior knowledge in order for each child to succeed. We assess students’ learning styles and design our instruction to address individual needs.
As parents, you should be proud of the staff’s many efforts to address students’ individual learning needs and the development of each child as a confident, capable, and committed learner and Catholic citizen. Some of the present initiatives include:
- Participation in the “Roots of Empathy Program”
- A Balanced Literacy Program at every grade level
- Increased focus on mathematical problem solving
- Differentiated instruction
- Continued utilization of the school website and classroom "My Class" as vital communication tools
- School Success Team Assemblies and many more.
Promoting and sustaining continuing development of the professional staff to improve the teaching and learning process is a key factor of a total professional learning community. The staff members of St. Patrick CES currently serve on a variety of school teams. It is our hope to increase student and parent voice/involvement in as many of the below as are appropriate:
- School Success (Improvement) Team
- Literacy Team
- Math Team
- Catholic School Council
- Emergency Preparedness Team
- School Resource Team
- Eco-School Committee, and many more
Building community confidence is a significant component of being an effective Catholic school. We truly appreciate the parental support at St. Patrick Catholic School. We want parents and community members to visit our school and feel welcome.
As parents and guardians, you are the first and most important educators in your child’s life. Your children bring life to our school each day, ready to participate with excitement and eagerness. It is both a privilege and an honour to be a partner in the Catholic education of your children along with St. Patrick Parish and the numerous community partners who support our school community.
Please refer to the attached presentation shared with students on Sept. 5th. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask. Please feel free to drop by and say hello over the next while. If you want to discuss any important matters, please remember to schedule an appointment. Otherwise, I look forward to meeting many of you on our “Meet the Staff BBQ Night” on Thurs. Sept. 21st starting at 3:00 p.m.
Vito Colella, Principal
